The Contenders

Welcome to round 1 of a regular appearing series “Protein Bar vs. Candy Bar.” I’ll take any ol’ protein bar and put it up against any candy bar. Today’s match is America’s favorite candy bar, Snickers, vs. one of the top sellers on BodyBuilding.com the Supreme Protein Carb Conscious Bar. Whenever someone hears Snickers, they don’t think healthy, but if you hear “protein” and “carb conscious” in the same sentence, you’d probably think it’s healthy. In fact, I bet a lot of America would think they could just replace a few meals with about any protein bar and be a “healthy” person. You might be surprised when you see the nutrition facts face off below.

As you can see, the Supreme Protein Carb Conscious Bar is almost a whopping 400 calories compared to Snickers’ 270 calorie count. It does contain 30g of protein, which is about 7x more than the Snickers bar. The sugar content in the protein bar (4g) is much lower than the Snickers’ sugar content (29g). It’s pretty surprising that a carb conscious bar would have 34g of total carbohydrates though. I realize that most of these come from sugar alcohols, but if I were dieting hardcore and counting all my carbs, then I’d include the carbs from the sugar alcohols as well. I’d rather just eat half a bowl of oatmeal, which is about 25-30g of carbs, contains more fiber, and is better for you than the sugar alcohols. As for the fat content, they’re almost identical 16g (protein bar) to the 14g of the Snickers bar. The Snickers does contain peanuts which is made up of some healthy fats (polyunsaturated and monounsaturated) but probably not enough to really benefit you.
